Present
THE PORT OF CORK COMPANY MARITIME COLLECTION
an exhibition of Maritime Paintings and Models

Open to the public from Saturday 9 June

running until Sunday 22 July

Special thanks to Peter Murray, Director,  Crawford Art Gallery

Sirius Arts Centre is pleased to present this exhibition of Maritime Paintings and Models from the Port of Cork’s collection. The Port of Cork Company's headquarters at Custom House is home to a fine collection of historic maritime art dating from the 1800s. Most notable among the collection are a number of maritime paintings by George Mounsey Wheatley Atkinson who painted ships and maritime views, and Robert Lowe Stopford who gave us a series of panoramic views of Queenstown (Cobh).  Both give us a great insight into the shipping of the time and glimpses of a harbour long since changed.

Many of the works in this exhibition are featured in the book Maritime Paintings of Cork 1700 – 2000 by Peter Murray, Director of the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork.  Sirius Arts Centre is pleased to be able to present this exhibition in our galleries. Special thanks to the Port of Cork, Crawford Art Gallery and Peter Murray in supporting this exhibition.

Gallery hours Wed – Fri 11Am -1pm and 2pm – 5pm/Sat & Sun 2pm – 5pm/Mon& Tues Closed.

Exhibition will run until Sunday 22 July

LEAVING HOME: Images of Emigration Circa 1920’s Cobh

From the Mount Brandon Hotel Collection
Opening Thursday 8 March 7:00pm

At the Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh

Images of Emigration Circa 1920’s Cobh

Running until Sunday 22 April

As part of the RMS Titanic Centenary Commemoration, Sirius Arts Centre is honoured to exhibit photographs from the Mount Brandon Hotel Collection (Courtesy of Mrs. Iris Toner). Taken in a local photography Studio, these images capture travellers prior to embarking on journeys that would change their lives forever. The exhibition also includes images of Cobh street scenes from the Lawrence Collection (Courtesy of the Wiltshire Collection, The National Library of Ireland).  In mounting this exhibition, Sirius Arts Centre wishes to create a space for contemplation and reflection, commemorating the RMS Titanic and all those who continued to emigrate from Ireland in the years that followed the tragedy – the people of in these photographs emigrated in the years after the Titanic left Cobh as many other thousands did in the years that followed.

Special thanks to Iris Toner for the loan of the collection to create this exhibition and to Tony O’Brien at Right Brain (www.rightbrain.ie) for his sponsorship and care in printing the images.
