Titanic ‘Series of Events’ briefing planned for the Cobh Business Community

Members of the Cobh business community have been invited to attend a special briefing on ‘The Series of Events’ planned to commemorate the 100^th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic next year.

Marc Anderson, Project Director of Titanic 100 Cobh 2012, will outline the event schedule in detail next Monday, 21^st November, at 6 p.m. in the Commodore Hotel. Giving all Cobh businesses the opportunity to understand what is proposed, the reasons for the initiative, and to receive feedback from the business sector on the planned events.

As Cobh was the last port of call for the Titanic and the town plays a very significant part of the Titanic story. Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 will mark this globally recognised occasion. The series of commemorative events will run throughout 2012 and many of them will be outdoors in locations such as the promenade and adjoining streets in town. There will be a requirement to close some of the roads to traffic within the main town area at various times, so it is important that local businesses attend this meeting so they are aware of the proposals.

“Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 is a series to remember the Titanic and the people associated with her in a major way,” noted Marc. “The centenary only comes around once and we must make the most of this opportunity as there is only one ‘last port of call’. We would like as many people in Cobh to be involved and we look forward to their support. Not only will we have the opportunity to remember the Titanic, it is our chance to bring more visitors into the area and boost the local economy. We want to commemorate the magnificent Titanic and the people involved with her in a special way. We want the people of Ireland and abroad to be more aware of Cobh’s significance in the story of Titanic. We want our beautiful town to continue to prosper in the same way as other towns that rely on tourism do.”

In September Sirius Arts Centre launched its fundraising calendar “A Year in Cuskiiny Marsh” featuring incredible stunning photographs by Rónán McLaughlin of our valuable nature reserve located in the heart of the Great Island.

As many of you know, there was a disaster in the Marsh last week which caused many of the creatures who live in the water of the Reserve to die suddenly. This was an unexpected incident, but Sirius has decided that to assist Cuskinny Marsh Nature Reserve in assessing this problem and keeping a watchful eye out for any further difficulties of this sort, we will donate €2 of sales from our fundraising calendar sold from Sirius Arts Centre or via our website to BirdWatch Ireland who manage the Nature Reserve. As part of the fabulous exhibition THE COBH FISH EXCHANGE which includes over 300 handmade mackerel created by local schools, community groups and individual artists - 50 fish numbered will be auctioned on Sunday 13 November at 7:00pm. Proceeds of these sales will benefit Sirius Arts Centre including the continued renovation of the building and community engagement activities. Aside from the 50 fish that will be auctioned, other fish in the exhibition can be purchased NOW or bought on the night of the auction, prices starting at €5 more information at the gallery. Deirdre Nelsonin celebration of 2011 Irish Year of Craft

Two exhibitions stemming from a residency with this Scottish based textile artist, originally from Northern Ireland:
Contemporary Souvenir presents a series of works as a result of Deirdre Nelson’s residencies at Sirius Arts Centre in 2010 and 2011. With an interest in social history, Deirdre explored the colourful town of Cobh and its stories of lace makers, knitters, ships, emigration, and the sea . She attended lace making classes with local groups in order to learn techniques and to hear new stories.

Many stories uncovered were of sinking ships (Titanic and Lusitania) and emigration. With an interest in presenting positive stories of the area and its people, Contemporary souvenir will present a series of positive 'souvenirs' for Cobh playing with the colour and characters of the area .

Amongst the works is a Sailors hat with a map embroidered on the top and a bowler hat to celebrate the visit of Laurel and Hardy to the town and the playing of their theme tune on Cobh cathedral carillon. A knitted football celebrates Anne Geary a local woman part of a knitting co-operative who travelled following the world cup in her later years .

A series of deck chairs have been made in collaboration with Anne Kiely ( printed textile artist living in Cork). These are created with imagery and stories of Cobh and the visitor is encouraged to sit upon them and look out to sea .

Cobh Fish Exchange is a collaborative collective project involving schools, community groups and individuals from all over Ireland, who answered Deirdre’s call for a mackerel run of the textile variety – fish of all shapes and sizes will fill the gallery!

Both exhibitions run from 15 October – 13 November

Sirius Arts Centre helps launch the 2011 Guinness Cobh Blues Experience with an evening of Delta Blues Steel Guitar with Aaron Curtis. Aaron has been featured at past editions of the festival but this is his first headline solo gig in the Sirius Arts Centre.

Londoner Aaron Curtis has been gigging around his native England for the past 10 years, gaining a reputation as one of the country’s hottest up and coming singers and guitar players. His debut album, “I’m Gonna Tell You” reflects his musical grounding in the values of blues masters like Freddie King and Otis Rush together with a love of street sounds; funk and hip hop. When pushed, Aaron describes his sound as “21st Century Blues”. The tunes on this album, all but one self penned, demonstrate an original and exciting new talent at work.

Sirius Arts Centre announces the launch of a new calendar illustrating one of the most beautiful treasures in the heart of the Great Island

A YEAR IN CUSKINNY MARSH 2012 Calendar captures the Cuskinny Nature Reserve in all of its beauty through out the year with photographs of a wide range of the flora, wildlife and landscapes that make up this jewel in Cork County.

Cuskinny Nature Reserve is privately owned – the Reserve is managed by BirdWatch Ireland. Through the vision and generosity of the landowners, the Ronan and Bird Families, the Reserve was established under a long –term management agreement in 1990.

All proceeds of the sale of the calendar will go to benefit the Sirius Arts Centre and its ongoing work providing community and cultural events in Cobh. Based in the Old Yacht Club Building on the banks of Cork Harbour, the Sirius Arts Centre has been working since 1988 to raise awareness about the arts and to provide opportunities for audiences to engage artistic events including exhibitions, workshops, lectures and music events in East Cork. The only fulltime operating arts centre in East Cork, Sirius is a non-profit, charitable organisation.

Originally from Malin Head, Co. Donegal, Rónán McLaughlin has been living in Cobh for nearly 20 years. A specialist in wildlife photography, Rónán’s work has been seen internationally and published in “Wings”, “Birding World” and “Birdwatch Magazine”. An exhibition with more of Rónán’s images from Cuskinny will be shown at the Sirius Arts Centre in mid November.

David Barrett’s work is reminiscent of Lucien Freud, richly worked oil on canvas, using oblique angles and sometimes, awkward composition, which gives the work a surprising intimacy. This is reinforced by the time it takes to produce each work and answers the question of why we have not seen more of this artists work before now. In regards to this exhibition “Home” Barrett says:

‘Most of my paintings are of my children. I had a notion that I might record their growing up…a sort of family album.’

As part of the Sirius Arts Centres policy to support local artists, engage local audiences and promote work of quality, David Barrett who is based in Midleton and works as head of the Art Department in Rochestown College will exhibit paintings from his Family Portraits series and his recently started nude series. Gary Kearney gathers a large body of photographic images comprised of architecture, perspective and natural lighting as source material for his paintings. Kearney’s starkly modernist style is intriguing in that it offers a perspective of Cork City, which is at once banal and poetic.

‘Through my work I am attempting to portray various aspects of the city.’

A community engagement exhibition being held in October 2011
WE NEED TEXTILE FISH!!!

As part of part of the celebration for the Year of Craft 2011.

The fish exchange project, which began in Scotland and now has spread to many coastal communities, including Cobh Co. Cork, where people are knitting and making mackerel for a large installation in the Sirius Arts Centre taking place in October 2011. As part of her Artist in Residence at Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, Scottish textile Artist, Deirdre Nelson, has been looking at the history of lace making in the area and the abundance of mackerel. Contemporary Souvenir/The Fish Exchange Cobh is a community project, Deirdre has developed, which will celebrate textile artists using both traditional and contemporary skills. The work will be exhibited at Sirius Arts Centre as part of the wider project contemporary souvenir in October/November 2011.

If you are interested in making a mackerel for the project here are some fishing rules.

Please note - YOU MUST KEEP TO THESE IN ORDER TO BE INCLUDED IN THE EXHIBITION.

Fishing rules:
… White on white (lace, crochet, knit, embroidery, quilt, felt) Silver, cream, pale grey, sequins, beads and bling permitted !!!
… Your mackerel should not be more than 30cm in length (small fish and fat fish allowed)
… Materials: Try and use what you have got or recycle if you can
… Have as much fun as possible
… No frames or hanging systems accepted, individual fish only

Minister Coveney Lends His Support for Cork Harbour Open Day 2011 ‘Call for Events’

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Mr Simon Coveney T.D was in Ringaskiddy at the National Maritime College of Ireland today to help promote Cork Harbour Open Day 2011. The event which takes place on Saturday 10^th September is aimed at embracing and showcasing what Cork Harbour has to offer.

This is the third year of Cork Harbour Open Day and organisers are hopeful that the wide range of events, such as, concerts on Spike Island, photographic Exhibition in Camden Fort, guided tours of an Irish naval ship and an open day at the National Maritime College of Ireland, will attract many people. A programme of events to date can be found on www.corkharbour.ie

The idea for a Harbour Open Day emerged three years ago following discussions between various stakeholders involved in the development and implementation of the Integrated Strategy for Cork Harbour. A group comprising of representatives from UCC, City and County Councils, Irish Navy and the Port of Cork set about working together to engage with users of the Harbour and to organise the Open Day.

Cork Harbour is the second largest natural harbour in the world, next to Sydney Harbour, offering beautiful locations for enjoying the outdoors, dramatic coastlines, and excellent leisure facilities, and is home to some very talented artists, sportsmen and women, and people who are passionate about the history, heritage and cultural value of Cork Harbour.

6980 Balls Roll Down Barrack Hill For Charity

The miserable weather didn't deter the the crowds from turning out in numbers today to watch the 5th Annual Barrack Hill Ball run take place late afternoon. Earlier in the day the events started with the Up-Hill Challenge, and families took part in the Crab Fishing and Treasure Hunt competitions. Musical entertainment was provided in the Promenade by the Army Band of 1 Southern Brigade.

Balls for the Ball Hill Roll proper, which cost €2.00 each, were on sale until approximately 3.40pm, just twenty minutes before our own Special Olympian Bronze Medal winner Clodagh Killcullen had the honour of letting the 6980 balls loose down one of Ireland's steepest hills. Great credit for the organisation of this annual event must go to Paddy & Lil Histon and all the volunteers who once again made the afternoon one to remember.

This was a charity fundraising event in aid of two charities – Brainwave Ireland and the Head and Neck Oncology unit at the South Infirmary Hospital in Cork, with the first five balls through a finishing line pipe at the end of the hill winning cash prizes.

Australia Day in Cobh:
Come and experience Down Under Right here in Cobh!
On 24th July - for one day only, Cobh transforms into an authentic mingling of Irish and Australian cultures as 1500 Australians step ashore from the Cruise liner Dawn Princess. The liner berths right in the centre of the Cork Harbour town as it continues its 105 day World cruise that started in Sydney on 25th May!
Cobh (formerly Queenstown) is a heritage town rich in maritime and emigration history. Throughout the course of its history, Cobh has seen 2.5m people leave Ireland through its port and has been visited and maintains a strong connection with the most famous ships in the world, past and present including the RMS Titanic, RMS Lusitania and the Queen Victoria.

It is however the transportation of convicts from Ireland to Australia that inextricably links Cobh and Australia. Between 1791 and 1853 approximately 26,500 Irish people were transported to Australia, many for trivial offences. Many were incarcerated on Spike Island in Cork Harbour while awaiting transportation and visitors to Cobh now have the opportunity to take a guided walking tour of the famous Spike Island. Following the end of transportation there followed the planned migration of Irish people to Australia, many of whom became prosperous.

It’s been over 150 years since a shipload of people left Ireland for Australia and this is only the second time ever that Australia has sent a shipload back!

Following the resounding success of Australia Day in Cobh in 2009 when the Dawn Princess arrived for the first time in Cobh on the first ever World circumnavigation from Sydney to Sydney, See You in Cobh and Cobh Tourism have decided to once again organise this marvellous and unique homecoming. The visitors from down under and the people of Cobh and Cork will enjoy together a day of welcoming events and festivities.

The day’s festivities include the sizzle of barbecues and incredibly delectable food stalls, masterly crafted local arts and crafts, traditional music that will have locals and visitors alike tapping their feet, Irish Dancing displays, an air sea helicopter rescue display with the Waterford based Coastguard helicopter and a performance by the Band of 1 Southern Brigade. Fascinating window displays in the town’s shops will depict life in Australia. Will, as in 2009, the Sydney Opera House, Ayer’s Rock and the Sydney Harbour Bridge appear to be “For Sale” in the Real Estate Agents windows?

The Mayor of Cobh, Councillor Jim Quinlan will welcome the Australian Ambassador Mr. Bruce Davies who will officiate at the Blessing of the Bonnets ceremony. ‘Roses from the Heart’ is a unique memorial to the 25,566 convict women transported to Australia from Ireland and Britain from 1788 to 1853. On Australia Day in Cobh this very unique and special event will take place at Cobh Heritage Centre at 12 noon to commemorate these women. Roses from the Heart is the concept of Christina Henri, an artist at The University Of Tasmania. The project involves the making of a bonnet , similar to that worn at the time, to commemorate the life and contribution each of the transported women made towards the founding of a new nation. Already 15000 of these bonnets have been contributed from all parts of the world, many from the descendants of those originally transported.

To round off the day the Cobh Confraternity Band will play on the quayside as the Dawn Princess sails for Bermuda to continue its 104 night odyssey around the World. Will the traditional “Anchors Aweigh” be replaced by “Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport” as 1500 happy Australians are given a traditional Cobh farewell with white handkerchiefs and Australian and Irish flags waving? The only way to find out is to be there and be a part of this unique occasion.

Sirius Arts Centre presents an evening with legendary Accordion player Charlie Piggott, originally from Cobh Co. Cork, and one of the founding members of Dé Danann and The Lonely Stranded Band. He toured extensively with both bands and later as a solo artist. For this special one night only event, Charlie teams up with esteemed Kerry fiddler Gerry Harrington. Cork Harbour Open Day 2011 ‘Date Announced’

The organisers of Cork Harbour Open Day are delighted to announce that the third Cork Harbour Open Day will take place on Saturday 10^th September 2011.

The idea for a Harbour Open Day emerged three years ago following discussions between various stakeholders involved in the development and implementation of the Integrated Strategy for Cork Harbour. A group comprising of representatives from UCC, City and County Councils and the Port of Cork set about working together to engage with users of the Harbour and to organise the Open Day.

Last year Cork Harbour Open Day was a huge success with great weather and hundreds of people enjoying a selection of free family activities available on the day. Activities organised suited all ages and ranged from tours on board an Irish Naval Ship, sailing, kayaking, rowing, RNLI information day and crab fishing for the younger generation!

Organisers of this year’s Cork Harbour Open Day said: ‘We are hoping for a similar line up for 2011 and are encouraging people to organise events for the day, which can be jointly promoted under Cork Harbour Open Day. Most of the promotion was done through the Cork Harbour website last year, with high traffic volumes visiting the site on the lead up to the event. This year the website (www.corkharbour.ie) has been re-designed to be more user friendly, contain information on Cork Harbour and promote events such as Cork Harbour Open Day.’

‘Cork harbour Open Day is all about embracing what Cork Harbour has to offer in terms of leisure amenity and raises awareness of the many different activities available for people in the harbour both on and off the water. Sirius Arts Centre presents the only Cork date for this Irish born US based singer songwriter – a night not to miss!

When Pierce Turner performed at the South by South West Music and multimedia Festival in Austin Texas this March he was pleasantly surprised to find that there was more space for an eclectic artist like himself in this post conglomerate music world than there was in the old.

Perhaps Pierce Turner’s unusual pedigree finally makes sense. Born and raised in Wexford Town he emigrated to New York in his early twenties with his friend Larry Kirwan (front man for Black 47) they formed The Major Thinkers and were signed to Epic Records, they’re single “Avenue B” almost cracked it. Eventually they went separate ways and while composing music for modern dance in Manhattan’s downtown art world Pierce hooked up with Avant garde composer Philip Glass.

Intrigued by Pierce’s songwriting and style of singing, Philip suggested taking the idea of producing an album for the Wexford man to a contact that he had at Virgin Records in London. Simon Draper of Virgin loved the music and the idea, flying Pierce back and forth a couple of times from the U.S. But Virgin was going through a big upheaval at the time with Richard Branson. And the deal got bogged down. Luckily the music was also handed in to Martin Mills owner of Beggars Banquet / 4AD and he snapped Pierce up for a 3-album deal with Philip Glass producing and writing string arrangements. Martin to this day believes that Pierce was ahead of his time and told him so when he attended his show at South By South West this March. He also believes that what Pierce does makes more sense in todays climate with the presence of solo artists like Antony and the Johnsons, Sufjan Stevens and James Blake.

The fact is, Philip Glass has collaborated with David Bowie, Eno, Leonard Cohen and Pierce Turner, heady company for this yellow belly.

This summer he plans to finish recording his new album, slated for an October release, it features a duet with Mr. Glass and reportedly a set of songs typical of the depth and soul of Pierce’s songs sourced from the fountain of time and experience.

It will be seven years since his last CD. See him in Ireland this summer and get an advance glimpse of this new material by the man that Liam Fay of the Sunday Times said “ he has created what I confidently believe to be the finest body of work in contemporary Irish music”

Artists, Arts Workers and those passionate about the arts from EAST CORK are invited to meet newly elected TDs: Tom Barry, David Stanton, Sean Sherlock and Sandra McLellan on Monday May 16^th as part of the National Campaign for the Arts’ nationwide Meet and Greet.

This ‘Meet and Greet’, will be held in THE SIRIUS ARTS CENTRE, The Old Yacht Club, Cobh County Cork at 11:30AM and is one of over 37 meetings organised with the 76 new TDs from their 43 constituencies nationwide.

Meeting local TD’s is one of the National Campaign for the Arts’ key strategies to ensure that the arts are on local and national government agendas and continue to be recognised as a vital part of contemporary Irish life.

The 37 Meet and Greets have three main purposes.

1. The National Campaign for the Arts wants to engage and grow a relationship with new local representatives. The organisation wants Tom Barry, David Stanton, Sean Sherlock and Sandra McLellan to know about the arts and to understand that its practitioners are a powerful resource. Local artists want to work with local government to affect change in the arts.

2. The Meet and Greet aims to inform and excite these decision makers about the arts, highlighting the impact and penetration of the arts in this area.

3. Given the value of the arts to the economy, to Ireland’s international reputation, to tourism and to the general wellbeing of our citizens, TDs will be asked to commit to a continued active investment in the arts and to support the National Campaign for the Arts’ call for sustained finding for the arts.

Cobh to remember Titanic sinking

As the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic appears on the horizon the people of Ireland will remember those who died in the tragedy at a ceremony in Cobh on Sunday 10^th April 2011.

Just one day short of ninety nine years after the Titanic called to Cobh on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York all of those who died when the ship sank will be remembered at a commemoration to be held in her last port of call.

One hundred and twenty three passengers boarded in Queenstown, what was at the time the largest and most luxurious ocean liner afloat.

Three days later the ship struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic and sank with the loss of over 1500 lives, including 79 of those who boarded in Cobh.

The prayer, hymn and wreath laying ceremony at the Titanic Memorial in Cobh Town Centre will be followed by the ceremonial reading of the names of the 79 unfortunate Cobh passengers by schoolchildren from Cobh and the parish of Addergoole in Mayo. Fourteen men and women from Addergoole, in North Mayo, set sail from Queenstown for a new life in America. Eleven died in the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

Rural Ireland resounds with tales of emigration, steeped in the traditions of letting go. The people of Addergoole will never let go of the memory of eleven neighbours and friends who disappeared with that ship of dreams and the Addergoole Titanic Society will have a large representation at the Cobh ceremony.

The Mayor of Cobh, Cllr. Finbarr O’Driscoll will place a wreath in the sea in honour of all those who lost their lives when the Titanic sank.

The ceremony in Cobh is organised by Cobh Tourism and will start at 3 pm from the Old Town Hall at Lynch’s Quay when a Colour Party from the Cobh Branch O.N.E. will lead a parade of representatives from Titanic and Historical Societies as well as Civic leaders and the schoolchildren involved in the ceremony. Musical honours will be provided by the Commodore Male Voice Choir and Cobh Confraternity Band. The proceedings will conclude with a bugler playing the Last Post and Reveille. Members of the public are encouraged to attend.

Cobh Town Council has recently appointed Creating Shows Ltd as Project Director for the 2012 Titanic Centenary Commemorations in Cobh. Work is underway to seek sponsorship and plan a memorable series of events for 2012 to mark the occasion. The series of events will be called Titanic 100, Cobh 2012.

Titanic 100 Cobh 2012 will highlight Cobh’s unique connection with The Titanic as the ship’s last port of call in 1912.

The series of events will be held in a number of locations throughout the town of Cobh and the Port of Cork area.

Events will range from special commemoration ceremonies, marine based activities and outdoor concerts, to Titanic talks, tours and exhibitions.

A unique group exhibition of Cork artists

Opening Thursday 10th March at 7pm

To celebrate the creative energy of artists living and working in the Cork area Sirius Arts Centre is once again inviting artists to exhibit in a unique group exhibition. Admission is open to artists over the age of 18, working in a variety of materials, there is a submission charge of €10 per artist. All work must be wall based for this exhibition.

There is no theme to this exhibition, but there are restrictions regarding work submitted as follows:

Art works will be accepted on a first come, first served basis (spase is limited).
Artists must contact Sirius (021 481 3790) from Monday the 7th February to book their place in the exhibition.
Drop-off of the works will be on Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th of March between 11am – 4.30pm (only for artists who have booked their place in the exhibition) a €10 fee must be paid at time of delivery.
Artists must be living & working in the Cork area and 18 years of age or over.
Due to space limitations artwork can be no bigger than 80cm/32” inches in either direction and be ready for hanging.
Each artist may submit no more than 2 pieces of artwork and works must not have been shown at the Sirius in the past.

Hanging will be done at the discretion of Sirius Arts Centre. As many works as possible will be hung though this will be dependant on the quality and the amount of work submitted as space is limited in the Sirius Galleries.

Exhibition opening reception will take place on Thursday 10th March at 7pm

Exhibition runs until Sunday 3rd April.

Action packed plans commencing for Cobh's 2011 events

The Cobh Calls collective are back on track and planning the 2011 calendar.
This year there is plenty for visitors and locals alike to do and see on our Great Island.
The Summer Swing will be kicking off on 30^th April when the magnificent Celebrity Eclipse will dock in Cobh overnight.

On 1^st May as the Eclipse departs one of our regular visitors The Independence of the Seas will arrive for an overnight visit. There will be lots of family entertainment including the very popular carousel for the children and a variety of musical performances throughout the two days.

The Lusitania and the Titanic Commemorations are also being planned for April and May and St. Colman’s Pipe Band are hosting the South of Ireland Piping and Drumming Contest in June.
Following the success of the first International Tattoo Festival last year, Phil Cummins is busy putting together a full programme for this year’s weekend Festival for the June Bank Holiday.
Cobh Peoples Regatta – the oldest and best regatta in Ireland, will take place in August while there will be art exhibitions and concerts at the Sirius Arts Centre. The Cobh Blues Experience - when Cobh comes alive to the rhythm of the blues and the International Deep Sea Angling Festival will be hosted in September and there will be lots more on right up to Santas visit in December.

West Cork Arts Centre and Sirius Arts Centre present a joint exhibition of photographs by French photographer, Gilles Perrin. The large format black and white images capture the lives of people working in maritime industries around the Cork coastline. Gilles Perrin selected the people to photograph by visiting harbours and piers in locations such as Cobh, Baltimore, Schull and Castletownbere, chatting to the people he met there and meeting others by word-of-mouth. He created his images, working with long exposure times and the large negatives utilised in this process allow tiny details to be viewed with extreme clarity. Often Perrin presents his work as diptychs and triptychs to reveal the full panoramic landscape of the subjects he photographs.

The pictures in People of the Sea are a valuable documentation illustrating the lives of people who work with the sea today, acknowledging this long standing tradition in Ireland's heritage.

Gilles Perrin is based in Paris, France and has a Master’s Degree in photography. For over 30 years Gilles has photographed extensively with large format cameras (4x5 and 8x10). His passion for photography has taken him to Africa, Tibet, Finland, India, China, Peru and throughout Europe. His work has been exhibited in Japan, China, Syria, Egypt, USA and Europe. This is Gilles Perrin's first exhibition in Ireland and the images in People of the Sea were made while in Ireland on artist residencies in 2007 and 2008.

The photographs in these two exhibitions were printed in Cork at iophotoworks by Tony O’Brien whose kind support is greatly appreciated. It was also made possible in part through an arts grant from Cork County Council and a donation by Cobh businessman, Michael Martin. Nicole Ewenczyk was also a key figure in the making of these images.

People of the Sea continues to January 2011.

“Try Cobh First this Christmas”

Cobh & Harbour Chamber’s launch their Shop Local Initiative this week. “Try Cobh First” is the slogan of this year’s campaign as customers are asked to shop in Cobh before heading further afield. “Cobh Retailers have a wide variety of goods on offer to the consumer at competitive rates with everything from handmade pottery to local art, trendy and designer clothing for children, women and men, vouchers for restaurants and other businesses and much much more” stated Kathleen Geary Chief Executive of the Chamber “We are asking shoppers to ‘Try Cobh first’ before going elsewhere and help support the local economy”.

In addition to the campaign and as a thank you to customers over 45 retail outlets in Cobh have joined the Cobh & Harbour Chamber’s shop local campaign and have contributed to a prize draw of over €2000 worth of vouchers which will be divided into a number of prizes. When a customer spends €5 or more they are in with a chance to win!! The competition will run until Saturday 18^th December 2010 at which time the draw will take place.

Slipway to the Galaxies audio-visual, Son-icons and sound installation is inspired by the Cork Dockyard in Rushbrooke which captivated Charlotte Hug during her residencies in Ireland which have been ongoing since 2005 with organisations such as ArtTrail and Sirius Arts Centre. Sound and the body interacting with external space, is what drives Swiss artist, Charlotte Hug to create installations and perform concerts of music and sound. Working with a combination of viola and voice, she creates a third kind of sound quality. Through a retuning and re-stringing of the viola, Hug brings physicality to the sounds she creates.

Charlotte is known for her solo performances in distinctive locations such as the ice tunnels of the Rhône glacier, the half demolished bunker in Berlin Humboldthain, the House of

Detention - a 250 year old former prison in Farringdon in London, the hot healing sulphur springs beneath the former luxury hotel of Verenahof in Baden, Switzerland and the dockyard in Cobh on the Irish Atlantic coast.

Hug seeks to develop instrumental techniques to their fullest possible extent, which includes the “soft bow technique”, by means of which she can play up to eight voices on her instrument. She plays a viola made by J.G. Thir in 1763. She also specializes in combining the sounds of viola and voice. What has resulted is an unmistakable and distinct tonal language.

Charlotte Hug is member of the "London Improvisers Orchestra", and founded the “Stellari String Quartet”, a string quartet with the leading British exponents of free improvisation Philipp Wachsmann, Marcio Mattos and John Edwards. She has collaborated with composers of the ICST: Institute for Computer music and Sound Technology, Martin Neukom, José López Montes, the photographer and film maker Alberto Venzago, the actor André Jung and the theatre and opera director Jossi Wieler. She collaborates with performers such as Joan Jeanrenaud, Maggie Nicols, Barry Guy, Phil Minton, Larry Ochs,

Evan Parker, Elliott Sharp.

The See You in Cobh Committee is delighted to be a part of the second annual Cork Harbour Open Day on Saturday 4^th September. We are holding a Crab Fishing Competition on the Promenade in Cobh Town Centre from 3.00 pm – 4.30 pm. This area is teeming with crabs and children of all ages should have a great time. A line, bait and bucket will be supplied and there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Summer Swing Finale on 29th August

On Sunday 29th August the magnificent Independence of the Seas will pay her final visit of the season to Cobh and to mark this occasion the Cobh and Harbour Chamber are hosting a full day of FREE Family entertainment to delight locals, visitors and passengers alike.

This will be the final Summer Swing of this years series and has something for all ages at this full days event. Headlining at 2.30p m will be the ever popular ‘Big Band’ who will perform many of your favourites on the beautiful restored bandstand in Kennedy Park (known locally as ‘the prom’). The Big Band started playing together last summer, and have been regularly playing pubs and functions ever since. Featuring eight veteran musicians all from the town, including three from the Cobh Confraternity Brass & Reed Band, the band play classic soul, jazz and pop with Katie McGroarty and Deputy Mayor of Cobh Councillor Jim Quinlan both on lead vocals. This group are guaranteed to entertain!

In addition to the swing element there will be a carousel for the children, facepainters, and a host of other entertainment including the very talented Diarmuid and Niamh who will entertain with some traditional Irish Music while these will be followed by Cold Shot lively mix of popular rock anthems. If all this wasn’t enough there will be a wide variety of arts, crafts and even the local farmer’s market.

Spike Island Tours

Marine Transport and The Titanic Trail Ltd. are happy to announce the launching of a daily guided tour of Spike island from 31^st July to the end of September, recent unauthorised press releases have given the impression that the tour will only take place on Saturday and Sunday however it will be offered every day, 7 days a week from now until the end of the season. If required by demand additional tours will be put on each day.

The time spent on the island will be between 75 and 90 minutes and the boat journey will be dependent on tidal conditions taking anything from 10 minutes over and back at high tide to 25 minutes each way at low tide. Extreme care should be taken when embarking and disembarking at the piers in Cobh and Spike Island.

Visitors should note the following. Due to conditions on the island such as derelict buildings, heavy vegetation and dangerous uneven road surfaces not all of the island is accessible and the tour is very much a guided tour. Current Health and safety requirements mean that visitors must stay in the company of the guide at all times. Children have to be very strictly supervised by their parents. There is no possibility at this time for individual exploration of the Island. The various hazards and control issues will be explained to all visitors. It should also be noted that for the first 40 minutes of the tour there are no toilet facilities until entry to the fort.

Decent footwear is essential and remember there are, as yet, no shops, restaurants of relaxation areas. The roadway from the pier up to the fortress is a moderate incline and some may find the climb challenging.

Despite the various issues of safety the tour explores the fascinating history of the island and visits locations and places that reflect its diverse use. We sincerely hope that the Spike Island Guided Tour will be exciting, interesting and provide a fabulous afternoon in Cork harbour and one of Ireland's most interesting Islands.

Introductory price arrangements are as follows:

Boats will leave from Kennedy Pier in Cobh daily at 2pm and tickets will be sold at the Ticket Booth there.

Adults: 12.50 Euro per person (includes boat trip and tour)

Children under 12 cost 8 Euro.

Introductory Family ticket of 30 Euro for 2 parents and up to 3 children. (further details at booking office)

Opening at the Sirius Arts Centre on Thursday 5th of August at 7pm

An exhibition of paintings and prints by Dublin based artist Gerard Cox at the Sirius Arts Centre will run from Friday the 6^th until the 29^th of August 2010. Cox has worked as an artist in different media over the last 35 years, from wooden sculpture and drawing to printmaking and painting in this exhibition. His work has always been based on organic forms and this work particularly celebrates life and nature through colour. In his works he attempts to capture the intensity of living, not in a representational way, but rather through the spirit of emanating from living things. While his paintings are evolved slowly, the layers built up gradually over a number of weeks to a point of frienzied, but controled activity. These works are a delight to the eye and the experience of painting is exposed here in all its glory as a joyous experience.

A Wreath Laying Ceremony took place this morning, Saturday 24th, at the Lusitania Memorial Cobh at 11.15 hrs.

Captain Paul Wright, Master of the Queen Victoria, on her maiden voyage, layed a wreath along with the Chairman of the Port of Cork. This Ceremony follows the visit of the Queen Mary last year and Cunard wish to make this an annual event.

Cobh Golf Club has successfully completed the transition to its new Par 72, 18-hole Championship Course at Marino Point, Cobh, Co. Cork, Ireland.

The new “Marino Point” Championship Golf Course boasts stunning views over the Cork Inner Harbour and the neighbouring estuary.

World-renowned golf course architects Hawtree Ltd, designed the course. The greens & tees have been constructed to USGA standard throughout, including the signature “10^th Hole”, Munster’s only “genuine” Island Green

On Monday, 26 July 2010, the Official Opening will be held with a “Golf and Fun Day” for all golf enthusiasts and their families. The Opening Day will be a family event that is not to be missed.

The Club is proud having secured the presence of defending Irish Open Champion, Shane Lowry. Plans are that Shane will play a 9-hole demonstration set on the new course and also hold a “Golf Clinic” which will include a 20 minute lesson for two lucky junior golfers. All junior golfers, present on the day, will be entered into a free draw and the winners will be announced on the day.

For all golfers, the program of the day will also include a “Nearest-to-Pin”, and a Putting and Chipping competition”, and also an exhibition of latest golf equipment.

For non-golfers, there will be plenty of entertainment, including music, barbecue and refreshments. A play-zone for kids and lots of different fun-games will make sure that young and old will be kept entertained. The program will also include a charitable “Closest-to-Pin ball drop competition” whose receipts will be halved by the Club and Cobh’s Community Center.

On Saturday 24th July the majestic Queen Victoria liner will pay her first visit of the season to Cobh and to mark this occasion the Cobh and Harbour Chamber are hosting a full day of FREE Family entertainment to delight locals, visitors and passengers alike.

As part of the Summer Swing Series this year on Saturday 24th July the town will come alive with a host of various musical entertainment. Cobh’s own ‘Big Band’ will perform many of your favourites on the beautiful restored bandstand in Kennedy Park (known locally as ‘the prom’). The Big Band started playing together last summer, and have been regularly playing pubs and functions ever since. Featuring eight veteran musicians all from the town, including three from the Cobh Confraternity Brass & Reed Band, the band play classic soul, jazz and pop with Katie McGroarty and Deputy Mayor of Cobh Councillor Jim Quinlan both on lead vocals. This group are guaranteed to entertain!

In addition to the swing element there will be a host of other entertainment with something to suit all tastes. If all this wasn’t enough there will be a wide variety of arts, crafts and even the local farmer’s market.

The Wilson Exhibition at the Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh. Opens this Thursday

Spanning three generations photographers, Robert (who has organized and compiled this exhibition), Joe - his father and Jasper - his grandfather.
The Wilson's have made a huge contribution to capturing and documenting Cobh over the past 80 years. This exhibition is comprised of a selection of works taken from the book 'The Journey' published by Robert Wilson last year, to mark the 10th anniversary of his father’s death.

Robert says of his father "Most people think of their parents as the best in the world , but my father was. What he crammed into his short life was amazing, despite ill health. What he wouldn't do to get a photograph is stuff of legend."

The photographs in this exhibition follow the path of an imaginary visitor arriving at Cobh by sea, walking through the town and finishing up at the cathedral, travelling backwards and forwards in time through the images.

Sirius is delighted to show these photographs celebrating the lives and work of the Wilson family.

Irish Coast Guard to hold annual Search and Rescue demonstration in Cobh on 19 June

The Irish Coast Guard today announced the annual Search and Rescue Demonstration will take place in Cobh, Co. Cork on Saturday 19 June at 2pm. The purpose of the exercise is to raise public awareness of safety on the water; both at sea and on inland waterways. The demonstration will also include a ‘fly-past’ by the Coastguard helicopter and the Air Corps aircraft.
Highlights of the afternoon will include a series of search and rescue demonstrations involving the Irish Coast Guard, the RNLI, the Naval Service, local authorities, the HSE, An Garda Siochana, the Port of Cork, the Civil Defence, the Red Cross, the Order of Malta and Cork Fire Service. The Search and Rescue Dog Association will also be in attendance.
The RNLI will provide advice on water safety and free Personal Flotation Device inspection.
Speaking today, Declan Geoghegan manager of the Irish Coast Guard said :
"Saturday 19 June is a great opportunity for members of the public to come along and to learn more about the Irish Coast Guard and the services we provide. It’s also a great opportunity for the Coast Guard to raise awareness about safety on the water, particularly during the busy summer season when many people are involved in water-based activities."
As part of the afternoon, primary school children are invited to enter an art and drawing competition. Competitors are asked to depict any scene illustrating a water rescue/emergency situation so there is lots of scope for imagination! Entries should be brought along on the day (with entrants name, age and school clearly marked) and handed in at the Coast Guard Mobile Communications Unit, which will be clearly visible on the day.
Michael Martin, President of the Cobh & Harbour Chamber expressed his delight at welcoming the Annual Search and Rescue demonstration to Cobh and said it will be a great opportunity to raise awareness of water safety in the harbour town of Cobh.

This high energy group delivery a variety of of jazz & old school rock n roll which has established them as one of the most exciting and sought after groups in the country. Their jive and jazz sets spark with energy, and swagger with a little bit of punk on the side. Formed in 2003 for the Cork Jazz festival The Roaring Forties have continued to mesmerize and enrapture audiences all over Europe and the States, bringing back the fun and musical adventure of the bands that toured circa the era their name references.

Summer Swing Free Family Entertainment for May

On Sunday 30th May the magnificent Independence of the Seas liner will pay her first visit of the season to Cobh and to mark this occasion the Cobh and Harbour Chamber are hosting a full day of FREE Family entertainment to delight locals, visitors and passengers alike.

As part of the Summer Swing Series this year on 30th May 2010 the town will come alive with a host of various musical entertainment. The ever popular ‘Swinging Bluecats’ will perform many of your favourites on the beautiful restored bandstand in Kennedy Park (known locally as ‘the prom’). The Swingin' Bluecats are a six piece Jump, Jive & Swing band specialising in the type of music that kick started the Retro Swing movement in the 1990's. Suited & booted in 1940’s retro style royal blue zoot suits, the band have brought the house down at many prestigious events and venues this year including Boutique Burlesque, Carlsberg Rhythm & Roots Festival, Rose Of Tralee - Festival Dome, and the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, to mention a few. The band is firmly focused on delivering the finest in Jump, Jive & Swing and are guaranteed to entertain!

In addition to the swing element there will be traditional Irish music by the talented Niamh Halligan and there will be a wide variety of arts, crafts and even the local farmer’s market who will have something for everyone. Not forgetting the children who will be entertained by a face painter, balloon clown and Arty Kids arts and crafts.

Sirius Arts Centre is a non-profit multidisciplinary centre for the arts in
Cobh. Running exhibitions, music concerts and Community Engagement
activities, as well as an internationally recognised Artist in Residency
Programme, the Sirius is housed in the listed heritage building, known
formerly as the Old Royal Yacht Club.

Like many arts organisations, this year is a struggle for Sirius due to the
economic downturn and €20,000 in funding cuts. This Open Garden fundraiser
is a way you can come out and enjoy one of the jewels in East Cork at
Cuskinny House and help support this worthwhile organisation at the same
time.

Local Wildlife Expert Jim Wilson will give a guided talk “Exploring
Cuskinny’s Wildlife” at 3:00pm on the day – an event you definitely won’t
want to miss!

On Friday 30th April the magnificent Celebrity Eclipse liner will pay her first visit of the season to Cobh and to mark this occasion the Cobh and Harbour Chamber are hosting a full day of FREE Family entertainment to delight locals, visitors and passengers alike.

As an early prelude to the Summer Swing Series this year on 30th April 2010 the town will come alive with a host of various musical entertainment. Cobh’s own ‘Big Band’ will perform many of your favourites on the beautiful restored bandstand in Kennedy Park (known locally as ‘the prom’). The Big Band started playing together last summer, and have been regularly playing pubs and functions ever since. Featuring eight veteran musicians all from the town, including two from the Cobh Confraternity Brass & Reed Band, the band plays soul, jazz and funk with Katie McGroarty and Councillor Jim Quinlan both featuring on lead vocals. They will be followed by the very talented Niamh and Diarmuid will be on hand with traditional Irish music, Dan Noonan of Disco 2000 is sure to have you dancing and also the local farmer’s market and arts and crafts stalls will have something for everyone. Not forgetting the children who will be entertained by a face painter and balloon clown and much, much more.

Titanic Commemoration in Cobh on 11th April

On 11 April 1912 Queenstown was the final port of call for the RMS Titanic.

Cobh commemorates the tragedy of the sinking of the Titanic each year. The 2010 ceremony will take place on 11th April at 2.30 pm. 79 passengers boarded the liner in Cobh and later perished in the North Atlantic.

Aisling Keating – Time & Tide – based on th subleties of landscape, the pieces in Aisling’s exhibition were inspired by places in West Cork, Meath and Kildare. Each painting includes the element of water in some form, be it sea, river, canal , stream or flood. The landscapes portray various states of dark and light and the delicacy of nature’s layers.

Mark Whelan – Imagination & the Abstraction of Symbolic Forms. Im this exhibition Cobh based painter, Mark Whelan explores the chaose of the imagination, visual uncertainty and the abstraction of symbolic forms.

Both exhibitions run until Sunday 24 of April
